David Sutton in action in Rd.2. of the Miltek VW Racing Cup Championship

David Sutton from Swinton was in action once again in Rd.2 of the Miltek VW Racing Cup Championship on Bank Holiday Monday.

After a successful first round David was looking for podiums this time around at Rockingham Super Speedway in Northamptonshire!

A fiercely competitive Qualifying session left David in 8th place but only a fraction of a second off third. However, in testing the race pace was very strong and hopes were high.

As race 1 got under way David made a fantastic start and was up to 2nd by the first corner, and that’s where he remained for the full race distance to claim his first podium finish of the year.

“After getting a great start I just settled into my driving and tried to put consistent laps together. I knew the tires were only going to be good for 3-4 laps and then start going off so looking after them would be key.”

David put pressure on the championship leader Arran Mason late in the race but, despite closing the gap significantly, was unable to get by

“Race 1 was fantastic and going from p8 to p2 was a real confidence builder for the next race.”

With a reverse grid for the top 6 in Race 2 it meant David would start from grid 5. Once again he made a strong start and was second after the first lap. Having known what the tire situation was after the first race David had a plan to look after the tires for the first few laps

“Mark (Slide Sports Team Principle) and I had a meeting before the second race and we knew if we saved our tires and didn’t push too hard at the beginning of the race we would come good towards the end”

That is what happened and on lap 4 David went for the lead and pulled a 1 second gap on his rivals. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be though as Mechanical Gremlins struck David’s VW Scrirocco R and a gear selection problem meant his pace slowed. “It first happened going in to Tarzan Hairpin. It’s a 2nd or 3rd gear corner and I was stuck in 4th so I was just a sitting duck for the guys behind me”

David still managed to bring the car home in 3rd place. After two podium finishes David is lying second in the championship only 4 points behind the leader. After the race David commented “I’m really happy with the results from this weekend as it puts us in a very strong position in the championships and our pace has been good once again. I would just like to say a massive thank you to my sponsors Avago karting and Functional Fitness. Also, to all my family and friends that came to support me and especially Mark and his team at Slide Sports Race Engineering.”
