Local kart track Avago Karting, Swinton, sent a team of highly talented youngsters to compete in the Dan Wheldon Karting Trophy at the Autosport International Show at Birmingham’s NEC on Friday 10th Jan.
Led by local VW Cup ace David Sutton the team also included Ross Wylie (British GT), Sennan Fielding (F4), Sam Morgan (VW Cup) and Rikki Christooulo (GT). The race was held in the honour of the two time Indy 500 winner and former Indycar Champion the late Dan Wheldon. All the proceeds from the race were donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. With stars from the world of motorsports including Troy Corser, Leon Haslam and Alex Lowes (Superbikes) the race was always going to be a tough one. However, fresh from a victory in their previous charity race, the Henry Surtees Challenge, the Avago boys were feeling confident.
Despite mechanical problems which left the squad a massive four laps behind the leaders at one point in the race Team Avago came through to win a thrilling race which saw the top three covered by just 11seconds after 428 laps! After the race David commented “I can’t believe we came back to win that one, after an hour it looked all over. It was a great performance by all the team to win such a prestigious event in aid of such a great cause”.
